Mama Microsoft shouts and hollers, but doesn't abandon his expired sons... this evening I saw in my XP taskbar the familiar golden shield of the downloading updates, but a right click said "download progress 0%".

After a few minutes it disappeared and I thought "what the heck?" ...but then the system became slow and almost froze at intervals, for about five minutes. I immediately opened the task manager, and it was showing as active the file in the title... after a few seconds it disappeared though, and the PC became fast as usual again. A quick search on the web confirmed that Mama MS had dowloaded and run in my PC the last "Malicious Software Removal Tool", as it always did once per month in the past six years. Because no one wants the 25% of all PCs to become infected as lepers...

I appreciate Linux, but my laptop is perfectly working as it is, thank you. I couldn't ask for a better machine. And I am fully protected.

From Microsoft:

Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool is aligned with the company's anti-malware engines and signatures, and as such the removal tool will continue to be provided for Windows XP through July 14, 2015. However, any PC running Windows XP after April 8, 2014 should not be considered protected as there will be no security updates for the Windows XP operating system.

Oh, goodie! Even if with Avast and Spybot S&D and Sygate Personal Firewall I feel safe.

Tests from the site GRC Shields Up !

1) All Ports check:

Your system has achieved a perfect "TruStealth" rating. Not a single packet — solicited or otherwise — was received from your system as a result of our security probing tests. Your system ignored and refused to reply to repeated Pings (ICMP Echo Requests). From the standpoint of the passing probes of any hacker, this machine does not exist on the Internet. Some questionable personal security systems expose their users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing themselves. But your system wisely remained silent in every way. Very nice.

2) File Sharing Test:

Yup. You can squeeze a little more life out of your archaic operating system :)
